Dressage, Derby & Double Cabs : This Equestrian Series Is Basically Fast & Furious… With Hooves

Apparently 300 HRSPRS and a loud exhaust aren’t enough… now we’re measuring performance in hooves.

At the ever-so-fancy Kyalami Park Club … where the grass is greener, the boots are shinier, and the horses have better hair than most Instagram influencers … Toyota South Africa Motors has officially launched the 2026 Toyota Equestrian Series. And no, this isn’t a joke. It’s year five of a partnership that’s galloped from “that’s interesting” to “okay, now this is serious business.”

For four years, Toyota has been quietly flexing in a world where the engines snort and the suspension has a mind of its own. Participation is up. Spectators are up. The sport’s profile has grown faster than Oom Jan’s opinions on Facebook. And now… they’re turning it up another notch.

Glenn Crompton, Vice President of Marketing at Toyota SA, essentially said: “We’re not just here for the photo ops.” The 2026 season comes with an enhanced prize purse, a stacked competition calendar, and enough prestige to make even the most stoic dressage rider crack a smile.

Let’s Talk Prizes… Because That’s Why You’re Here

First up… dressage. Yes, that’s the ballet of the horse world. Precision. Poise. Power. It’s like Formula 1, but the gearbox has feelings.

At the 2026 Toyota South African Dressage Championships … happening 29 July to 2 August at Kyalami … the winner won’t just get applause and a handshake. There’s a draw. And the prize? A brand-new Toyota Starlet Cross.

Yes. You pirouette correctly, and you could drive home.

Then we move to showjumping … which is less ballet and more “hold my champers and watch this.”

The Ultimate 4×4 Series Powered by Toyota

Toyota has cheekily branded the 2026 showjumping season the “Ultimate 4×4 Series Powered by Toyota.” Because what better way to celebrate controlled “dances” than comparing it to a Hilux?

Four premier events make up the gauntlet:

  • The Toyota Easter Festival … 28 March – 6 April
  • The Toyota Midrand World Cup Qualifier … 28 – 31 May
  • The Toyota SA Showjumping Championships … 29 July – 2 August
  • The 2026 Toyota SA Derby … 1 – 5 October

Survive all that with the most points … and you drive off in a brand-new Toyota Hilux Double Cab Legend.

That’s right. Clear enough fences, and you get the bakkie that’s probably already parked outside the venue anyway.

It’s clever branding, really. Showjumping demands peak fitness, trust, split-second reactions, and nerves of steel. Sound familiar? Ja. That’s basically a Hilux advert.

Heather Mpofu, Event Director at Kyalami Park Club, calls this fifth year with Toyota a milestone. And she’s not wrong. Each year the series has grown in scale and reach, proving that equestrian sport in South Africa isn’t just a niche pastime for people named “Sebastian.” It’s competitive. It’s growing. It’s serious.

And then there’s the heart of it all… the KPC Academy.

Fifteen riders. Full entry cover. Real mentorship. Training with pros. Learning everything from grooming to finances. Because as Mpofu puts it … equestrian is a career, not just a hobby.

Translation? This isn’t just about shiny trophies and Instagram posts. It’s about building proper riders. And better humans.

So yes … while the petrolheads argue about torque curves and launch control … Toyota is quietly building a different kind of horsepower empire. One built on discipline, partnership, and the kind of trust that can’t be downloaded from a tuning app.

And if you’re still rolling your eyes thinking, “Ag, it’s just horses,” remember this…

At the end of the season, someone’s driving home in a Hilux.

Hoof drop.
